NYC-safestreets.org started in December 2004 in reaction to the recent spate of sexual assaults
in the Williamsburg and Greenpoint neighborhoods. NYC-safestreets.org links businesses and creates maps to help you travel safely.
This is the first website dedicated solely to women and pedestrian safety in New York and Brooklyn, and has already received coverage
in the The New York Times and The New York Daily News and Gothamist.com
Women have a sixth-sense about how to safely navigate city streets, and it's time to make that information
available. Anyone can do a web search to find the closest takeout Chinese restaurant, but there is nothing that helps women navigate
the streets from their perspective. Following online mapping directions should not put us into unsafe situations that could have been
avoided. The goal is to raise awareness of the issues we face—and how we can work to protect each other.
